1.3 Task One to Task Six Conversation Tasks

Task One- Topic: Making a phone call

You (as role A in this conversation) should create a scenario of making a phone call to your partner for some reason or purposes under the scenario which you have predesigned, and then you will make a phone call to your partner and let her response spontaneously to your at least 5 questions, invitations, advise or comments …etc.
You  (as role B in this conversation) will also receive a phone call from your partner who will call you for some reason or purposes under the scenario which she has predesigned, and then you should response spontaneously. You must be able to hold your conversation to answer her questions or response to her invitations, advise or comments …etc. by your own for one minutes.  

As role A:
1.      You should introduce yourself to the person whoever pick up the phone
2.      You should ask whether the person who you are looking for is home or not
3.      You should ask the person who you are looking for to answer the phone or when he/she will be back
4.      You should address the purpose of making this call
As role B:
1.      You should response to the introduction of  the person whoever making this call
2.      You should response to whether the person who A is looking for is home or not
3.      You should response to ask the person who you are looking for to answer the phone or when he/she will be back
4.      You should response to A’s purpose of making this call

Task Two - Topic: Restaurant Survey

You have just finished a delicious meal with your family and friends at a Chinese restaurant. After having meal and before you leave, this restaurant’s waiters invite you to conduct a survey to help them to improve their services and market their business. These survey questions are generated randomly by machinery electronically in Chinese orally and you would need to response in Chinese orally as well.

Some machine generated questions examples are as follows

1.         你怎么知道我们饭馆的?How do you know about our restaurant?
2.         你经常到我们的饭馆吃饭吗? How often do you visit our restaurant?
3.         你对我们饭馆的服务觉得怎么样?How do you feel about our restaurant’s service?
4.         在我们的饭馆你通常点那几道菜? What dishes do you normally order?
5.         你觉得这里的菜怎么样?How do you think about our dishes?
6.         在我们的饭馆你觉得你最享受的是什么?What’s the best part of your time here in the restaurant?
7.         你觉得这里的卫生怎么样?How do you feel about this restaurant’s hygiene
8.         你觉得我们餐厅的气氛如何?How do you think about the atmosphere at our restaurant?
9.         你每次来到我们餐厅通常花多少钱?How much do you normally spend in our restaurant each time here?
10.     你可以向我们建议餐厅的营运时间吗?Could you suggest our restaurant’s operation hours?
11.     你觉得在我们的饭馆最需要改进的是什么?What do you think we need to improve most?

TaskThree - Topic: Weather Help Line
As the increase of the number of overseas students learning Chinese, tourists travelling China, business people visiting suppliers or retailers in China, they need different kinds of information help before they actually set their feet on their destinations in China. Chinese Government provides all sorts of information to help these students, tourists and business people. As you are working for Chinese Government information desk help call centre through the internet to receive people’s inquiries, weather help is one of the sectors on your position.
When people select a certain area they would like to visit and their queries related to the weather, the phone line will automatically transfer to your line.
As Role A: You need to choose a location, either a city or a province in China you prefer to work for and do your research for all the weather information which people could possibly ask. Give the answers according to the questions people could possibly ask and the information you have collected.
As Role B: You need to choose a location according to the information on cities or provinces available to ask questions and response to the answer given by Role A.
For Example:
As Role A, you would like to help people to know about the weather in Beijing. Then you would start to collect the information about how the weather looks like, the temperatures differences, the clothes suggested, etc. in different seasons.
As Role B, if you choose to inquire the things related weather in shanghai, you would assume you are under a scenario of either students, tourists or business people going to China, you need to ask the person who have a good preparation of the things related weather in Shanghai.
1. Period of time of date for each season
2. Activities available and recommended in different seasons and months
3. House worm level and any cooling or heating system could possibly install according to different seasons
4. Clothes available and recommended in different seasons and months
5. Things you can buy in different seasons and months
6. Food, fruits available and recommended in different seasons and months
7. Things you can talk about (e.g. July-baseball) in different seasons
8. Food provided normally in the restaurants in different seasons and months
9. Day and night temperatures differences in different seasons
10. Festival occurred in different seasons and months
Your conversation will be videoed for training purposes


Task Four –Topic: My School Life

As a student at Westlake Girls High School, you have a general knowledge of how New Zealand’s education system and national examinations and assessments work, and you also have a good knowledge of Westlake Girls High School environment, the functions of departments and locations of buildings. You are chosen to represent school to go China with International Department to attend World Education Expo to attract high school students at Shanghai in China to go aboard to New Zealand to study at Westlake Girls High School.

During the World Education Expo, you could be asked about the following questions

·           the (options) subjects’ availabilities,
·           the year level and length of each subject provided and
·           objects, equipments or instruments you normally use or
·           activities you normally do in different subjects and lessons at your school,
·           period’s segments and time allocated in a daily time table,
·           school days and school terms arrangement,
·           school home works, examinations and national assessments, marking systems,
·           school departments and the functions of departments and
·           locations of school’s buildings,
·           the attitude students should have towards their learning and school’s discipline or punishment policy.


Task Five - Topic: Rugby World Cup Information Centre

The biggest international sport event, Rugby World Cup 2011 which New Zealand had ever hosted since 1987, is around the corner. During Rugby World Cup 2011 period, from the beginning of September till the end of October, we will expect hundreds of thousands competitors and visitors from many different countries to come New Zealand. Even though English is now international language, but we will expect some people still need help in some ways in their own languages, especially Mandarin help for Chinese visitors. Since there are only few of New Zealand high schools provide Mandarin classes, as a student learning Mandarin at high school, you are chosen to be a volunteer at information center set up at some key places, such as Eden Park Stadium, Albany Stadium and City Centre…etc. to help Chinese mandarin speakers to direct or guide them to the place they would like to go and visit, whenever they need your help. (You must include present, past and future expressions)
Role A: Volunteer helper at any information centre you choose.
Role B: Visitor from any Mandarin speaking country.
Your conversation could include the following points
·           Greeting to each other
·           Asking if someone knows something
·           The destinations and the features or positions of destinations
·           The reference points and the features or positions of reference points
·           The directions to reference points and destinations
·           The distances from points to points and to destinations
·           The length of time required from points to points and to destinations
·           The indefinite numbers
·           The modes of transports
·           Stating before or after an event


Task Six - Topic: Westlake Chinese Night Promotion

The first Westlake Chinese Night had been successfully held at Westlake Boys Auditorium on the Fri 29 July at the end of term 2 2011. As a student in Chinese class, you are requested and you would also like to promote Chinese Night 2012 to some Chinese students who are at other schools and/or are old and/or new coming to Westlake Girls High School and did not attend Westlake Chinese Night 2011.

Your conversation would need to persuade your partner to come Chinese Night 2012 by telling her what had happened at Westlake Chinese Night 2010 and what would be presented at Chinese Night 2012. You could also persuade her to give up some activities which she is normally doing or has planned to do, by expressing ‘no interest’, ‘boring’, ‘….

You need to convince your partner to go for Westlake Chinese Night 2011, you would be challenged to be told that she have her scheduled routine activities or have arranged other activities or negatively thinks about this event. Your conversation could include the following,

·           Something good and worth to participate
·           How often this event happens compared to other activities. (Use of ‘mei’ to state frequency)
·           Express no interest and boring about something to discourage your partner. (Use of ‘bushi’…’jiushi’ to state ‘if not.., it will be ….’
·           Encourage your partner by describing how interesting or/and exciting this event was and will to be. (Use of ‘you….you….’ to link all positive describing words, to stress and enhance this event)
·           Express about interests
·           State about the degree of comparisons
